That's the third time I start a possible respond on Duncan's discussion. This shows how complicated it may end up. So this time I take a different approach . I use the words of a intelligent writer to start and will mess it up later.
$00 years ago Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet:

" There is nothing bad or good but thinking makes it so . "
That could be my respond to Duncan's question. ( I do not think that Shakespeare was thinking on that topic , but it fit's nice for me.
So we may over the next few days or longer have to do some thinking together. I will try to give you an inside view , how I try to do a training proposal inthis particular question of Lactate and mitochondria. I will try to back it up with research articles and some own ideas.
Here a start:Hans Selye : ? Walter Cannon:

1911 Harvard Medical School : Walter Cannon did research on stress : His end result was the famous : Fight or flight as the most primitive and elemental evolutionary response of all organisme to danger or perceived threat .

After that physicists and biologists simply denoted stress as " pressure or strain "
Till 1956 , when the Viennese emigrant to Canada Hans Selye redifined stress to basically mean all of life's influences. He called it " the nonspecific " response of the body to any demand made upon it .
He made a disticnt differences from stress and stressors .
.
most human activities go trough thress stages in a stress situation .
Stage 1 ? / Stage 2 ? stage 3 ?
Now let's start thinking ?
