Allow me to give some thoughts about use of heart rate and lactate and perhaps some additional measurement tools in using PC or any other typ of possible training. I am aware that in a short explanation here I will miss a lot of points , but you can add to it and we have again a nice discussion.
Introduction :
1. Heart rate may be affected by the coordination demand on a sport or the amount of muscle groups involved ( plus by a lot of other reasons like temp, a.s.o. ) I like to limit the thoughts for the moment more on the amount of muscle groups involved.
As you may see on your own body , if you do a sport with a lot of muscle groups involved you may have a realtive high HR but do not feel to bad at all.
Ex. cross country skiing as a full technique.
Now if you do only double pole movements you may have a bit more problem to get your HR up.
Or if we go to cycling.
Testing on a stat. bike with no balance problem and no other challanges than turning your pedal has a different Heart rate responds , as if you bike off road.
Thats why even the best testing equipment in a lab may not give you the real Heart rate values in the field.
So heart rate may actually give a paradox respond in some cases as I will outlinie now.
When we tested people on PC you could see , that at the beginning the heart rates went very high.
Reason : the people like to show that they can do it , so they fight , but not pedal very smooth, but they keep going , so out of the pedal motion they create a " surviveing " motion and include more and more body parts. The amount of muscle groups involved is now big enough to stress the cardio vascular system sufficient to bring the HR up.
It is also big enough that the lactate is getting up there.
Nevertheless the muscle groups who are getting punished the most is still the hip flexor group.
Now there is only so much you can cheat , resp. so much of anaerobic overload your hip flexor will be able to tolerate before he will quite his job.
After a few days completely over reaching this guy has it finally and will not do anything or very little ( Will show later how we try to test this. Now the athlete may not be able to bike anymore at all, and if he still could do a little bit the HR respond will be much lower. Also his lactate respond will be lower. as less muscle groups are involved , less or shorter duration and some other points. Will explain it on the lactate paradox respond idea.
So a lower HR on a relative low wattage and a lower Lactate on the same level as a few days or weeks before , may produce the impression of being
in a better shape cardio vascular and metabolically , when in fact there is a local failure of the hip flexor system
Therefor we use additionally EMG activity together with ammonia ( you could also test urea / harnstoff and in some studies later in the complete overreach situation testosteron / cortisol ratio ) We will come back on this possibility as well.
Now this as a short start to get our brain cells coordinated.
Next up : Lactate and Lactate dynamic in this specific case we are talking about.
Have to go Juerg.
