Dan,

The strength and conditioning coach of the Tampa Bay buccaneers asked me for a pair of PowerCranks that would lock up "backwards". I thought it was for his defensive backs who have to "backpedal" as part of their game. However, I am not so sure now as, when we were later talking, he guaranteed me that cyclists would cycle faster if they also practiced some in this way. I am not convinced of this but he was very certain. I will let Juerg do the studies to confirm this. :-)

I am also considering developing an exercycle by which basketball players could dribble the ball while cycling. Seems that there is a lot more we do that just pedaling when we ride a bike and the better neural control we have of our muscles the better off we would be as athletes.

Anyhow, I think there is still a lot to be learned about optimizing performance.
