A proposed model:

have an athlete reach fatigue in weight lifting, have them go to complete failure where they would have terrible difficulty lifting a small weight, and where it would be impossible to lift a weight that they have previously demonstrated they are able to lift. have the athlete recline at this point and give them a little jolt (emg stimulator) to see how much the muscle responds compared to a non "fatigued" state.

Do the same with endurance task like cycling (would have to be challenging pace otherwise the researching will be waiting too long for the athlete to fatigue).

Compare: muscle response for same emg stimulus before and after “fatigue”, and fatigue after heavy resistance training and endurance training. How much is mental? Was there much left in the muscle when the athlete felt “fatigue”? Are there stages? What is perceived exertion and emg response correlation with these stages of fatigue if they exist?

Use emg to invoke contraction before physical task (baseline), then measure voluntary contraction until failure, then use emg to invoke contraction after failure and see what happens.

I may just try this experiment myself with a physiotherapist I know. I will be the guinea pig.
