Here are some trend numbers from a 5 month long case study.

2 people ( age 43 and 54 ) trained 3 x / week with a IHT protocol during cycling ( own respiratory system ) and 3 x / week respiratory training with Spiro Tiger in sitting

2 people did the same but all workouts where in sitting ( IHT just in sitting )
The question was :
Does it make a different if IHT was done under involvement of muscles versus passive IHT.

The parameter we where interested in was the O2 extraction by a given wattage , as well as the maximal FeO2 values.

The protocol was as followed.

6 x / week respiratory workout with
3 x / week 30 min respiratory workout with 65 - 75 % +- TV of the VC.
Example: 4 liter vital capacity would give a TV of 65 - 75 % = 2.6 - 3 liter.
So with the Spiro Tiger it would be a 2 or 2.5 liter bag.
The criteria was , that the client could breath 30 x / min and maintain a stable O2 sat of =- 1 % to the resting O2 sat.
The IHT was done by reducing O2 sat down to max. 90 % with steps of 5 units ( trainings ) starting by 94 - 95 % / dropping for 5 units to 92 - 93 % and finally to 90 - 91 %.
As mentioned 2 did IHT during biking and 2 did IHT during resting.
The actual respiratory workout with stable O2 sat was done for both the same.
The active 2 guys would use a prototype for both ideas.
The "resting " 2 where using a Spiro Tiger.

Results:

Active group :
VC (L) FeO2 % VO2/kg

Person 1 4.3 / 4.3 15.63/14.39 54 / 59

person 2 4.8 / 5.3 15.98/14.93 47/ 53

Passive group

Person 1 3.9/ 4.4 16.04/ 16.02 38/39

Person 2 4.2 / 4.1 15.83/ 15.89 37/ 37

Interesting tends but not enough clients yet . We need at least 50 cases like that so we will be back in about 2 years to give you more info, as well as like to follow up on this people to see whether there is different effects over the summer .

The trend shows a study I mentioned a few weeks back from Japan , which showed a possible link between active IHT as the better way of improving O2 delivery compared with just doing it in sitting.
It may be , that besides stimulating EPO release there may be some additional factors like O2 move from blood to cells and an active IHT may "mark" working muscles as more in desperation for O2 compared with just a general drop in O2 sat .
The main problem for us was to design an equipment , where we could do the IHT outside or on a roller.
Our prototype is not bad , bad as so many parts we will work on it to improve it.
We will start to try to use it in other sports during activity like Kayaking , running , biking and cross country skiing , as well as with wheel chair athletes.
The key is weight and control of O2 sat as well as pCO2 control.
So we will keep you updated and it is fun to actually use the Fit Mate for more than just testing of VO2.

PS : for people living in the Dubai / Abu Dhabui area. Hey besides the Joshua Tree desert we seem to have a trend here for NOC center in warm areas.
Duncan has an NOC Center in Abu Dhabi and it was fun to have Duncan here for a few day's for a very intense discussion and testing sessions.
So if you have time visit him in the "oven " ( smile )
