Woww , not good to have a new toy arriving during the week. Not a lot of sleep. But woww , what a nice small toy to get hocked to work with. Here a very short intro what it may be able to do besides the companies ideas. First it really works incredible . I can sit in my office and a person works out behind in the fitness studio 2 / 3 wooden walls and I still have connection. Yesterday I walk on the outside of the building and Herb still had contact and could see that I "went" down. So my next steps will be driving in a car and follow a biker and see how far I can get info from his body. 2. Go in the pool and have possibly the first set of info on a swimmer during training . on his HR , breathing technique and frequency but as well on the possible change of his position in the water. 3. Next goal : testing with Spiro Tiger to see the pattern and the frequency. Next step integrate it with a VO2 and a FaCT Iris to see trends in change of temperature and breathing pattern. The nice feature is that you actually have an amplitude of your breathing pattern , besides the frequency and it is amazing how regular and irregular you actually breath. Now I may be able to even see , whether the problem on the clients breathing pattern may be inspiration or expiration , which will tell us , whether he is more stressed on releasing CO2 than on increasing O2 intake. This will be very interesting to compare with VO2 / breath and O2 Sat. Now here another feature. The so called activity level is highly sensitive and it is a 3 dimensional system, who show the "activity " your body is in during motion or at rest. So you actually can use this for the opposite reason. You can check , how little activity you produce. Example. During riding my bike in a step test I had on 100 watts an activity level of 0.1- 0.13 You can change the scale to x 10 or x 1000 on the graph. well first it is just a number , but again we look for the trend. Now with increase of wattage my activity level did not increase at all first, till I hit LBP and now it suddenly started to go up 0.46 - 0.49 and I could feel that I worked harder, but as well I felt that before it went up. Now once I concentrated on my smooth spinning I could bring it down again. So when I work "technically smooth I had less activity level than once I started to use my whole body. So we may actually be able to work on "technique " in a way to try to keep the excess motion of the body on a minimum. So it will show a possible solution of body position and fatigue. This will be fun for sports like biathlon in the shooting range as well as cross country skiing and even running. As less activity as better the stability of the core strength. Woo speculation first but the weekend will tell me more. I may actually be able to produce a FACT idea for aerobic ( step classes ) with using the activity level as a why of a "performance " indicator. and than using the FaCT basic idea to run the test. Next step is that heather has the client on the bio harness and can see who in the class actually over pushes the intensity based on respiratory frequency as well as activity level. As you know the heart rate is too slow to adjust for short term changes you have in this fitness classes, . The activity level is like your wattage meter on your bike you use for short intervals , because the HR is to slow to show this intervals . So yes I believe the bio harness will give us a nice additional tool for individual training improvement for a very reasonable price with lot's more options to come. You can as a coach now really see in the athlete's workout directly during instead of after. So much more to come over the next few weeks. Juerg |

First impression after a few tests. Well as every new toy it is fun to explore and test and it is fun to think above and over the explanation of the producer. I think for the moment that there are a lot of different applications with this equipement. Some, who come in my mind after this 3 days of testing : 1. Improvement of technique , body position and economy in a sport using the activity level. The activity level is very sensitive so even sneezing and caughing shows up in a small change of the activity . So as an example , when you start during running to move your arms more or your body starts to "popp " around you see an increase in the activity level . well true you are more active overall but less ergonomic and less efficient for performance. Example : you walk , or you nordic walk , you will see why nordic walking is much more activity than just walk. On the other side you bike and your activity level goes up you see where you may start to loose efficiency. So where is that coming into our ideas Well when you run a FaCT Iris and you use Herb's new Excel softwear for Caloric efficiency you may possibly see that in steps where your efficiency is not as good a higher activity level than in steps where the efficiency is better. Meaning , if you not like to start out with a Fit Mate equipment , due to the money , we may be able to read indirectly with no actual values , in which steps you may be more or less efficient. Interesting is that , depending on RPM , you can see where the RPM loses the efficiency and your body loses the smooth position. 2. Breathing and breathing technique. Woo that is an eye opener . I thought , due to my very regular breathing training , I would have a pretty good feeling and my breathing may be very regular . Woow was I wrong . ( it is pretty much the smae feeling you will get the first time on PC - pwer cranks )) I breath fairly regular , but if I concentrate on some other body problems like position , or RPM , or round motion , I can immediatly see , how this "concentration" starts to get on the cost of regular breathing . You can see that you even start changing the way you breath to more inspiration or more expiratioin position. It is interesting to see that , as harder I go as more I start to try to suck air in , but not breath properly out. Now here a very short line of thoughts: - As higher your breathing frequency , as faster the air movement. - often as higher your breathing frequency as lower the tidal volume ( air volume per breath) - as higher your air movement as shorter the "contact time " in the gas exchange area . O2 moves slower than CO2 - as smaller your tidal volume as less distribution of air in your whole lungs, as smaller the chance to have gas exchange in all the possible contact areas. , As smaller the amount of air in a relative big lung , as smaller the air pressure and as smaller the amount of O2 who moves over pressure diff. in to the blood stream. As smaller the tidal volume as bigger the % of the dead space . As bigger the dead space as higher the CO2 concentration will go . as higher the P CO2 as more the breathing frequency will be stimmulated . and you start all over again. Now if , as in my case my Inspiration is " strong" and I suck 2.5 liter in , but I breath not good out I start to increase the " dead air" and CO2 content in the 5 liter lung So I suck air ( packing air ) but I am not exhaling the same amount . So my feeling of having not enough air is a wrong idea , as I in fact have too much air , and I am not breathing enough air out. / kind of like a situation in an asthma attack. So on the bio harness you actually can see , when you start moving into a more inspiration over activity or into a more expiration activity. Now based on that you have a beautiful tool to use as a biofeedback for relaxation breathing and or Yoga exercise control, as well as for checking on stretching position to try to find the position with the smallest activity level to have the best relaxation you can get. Well tomorrow we will work , if weather allows us outside with car and bike and follow the cyclist and see how far and how reliable the equipment works. So if this works it will be a great tool for coaches like rowing ( follow with the boat ) but Tennis , swimming , cycling , and any other sport we can think of where we would like to see how breathing realy works live and whether we see a pattern of situations in the different sports. So I think we just start to scratch here on the surface and as with so many things we started it will take 5 - 10 years , till we have a better understanding of the tool , and it will take another 3- 5 years till we see some innovative coaches actually ordering this equipment . In the mean time we will have fun exploring new areas and learning how traditional thinking may be based on a very week fundation due to lack of tools to check "standardized " believes . So have fun and come back to read , and if you are interested into more details please feel free to ask , even with the high risk , that we may have no answer. ( smile ) Juerg I am looking forward to do an initial presentation In California ( Joshua Tree ) on the upcoming weekend and I am interested on the feedback of the coaches and people there. Cheers Juerg |

Woowww stayed tuned here if you are ready to see what we can do here besides the clear points and suggestions. What's about the idea , that you can check flexibility ( Range of motion in a joint like knee joint or any other joint very opjectively with just the actuall sensor and a tape to stick it at your leg or arm. You can use it to controle restricted ROM due to an operation as well. You can use it to limit ROM during certain exercises like Roman chair exercises to avoid hyperextension or see, when you start loosing actual extension strenght . hmm stay tuned and come back . |

Hallo Piotr, My name is Juerg and I am a part of FaCT with Herb. I am mainly doing the testing and research part in FaCT. Here just some ideas on Bioharness and sport. I am interested to use it in sports , where controlling breathing and heart rate and body controlle is important. Like swimming, biathlon ,kajaking and so on. The beauti is , that as a coach you can pick up your athlet, when he enters the shooting area and see how his heart rate , breathing frequency and body position as well as his activity behaves during shooting. The breathing is not just the frequency but as well the way he is breathing , like , depth of breathing as well as the ratio in how breathing in and out. The acceleration system will tell us the activity level as well the position change the athlets may do during the shooting. You can see this all live on your screen and can store it for later and compare with a video as well. Or you can store the whole race or training and review it later on your computer. You can sit in a cabin in the shooting range and see the info still. The belt is very comfortable to wear and should not hinder any motion at all. The question of energy expenditure can't unlikely been made but you can use HR in combination with the VO2 testing you do to calculate energy needs for training and during racing. Please come back if you have more questions Juerg |

Bioharness and swimmer. Here the "unfortunate " situation, that for the moment we can't use the bioharness in the water. Well we did and the result was it did n ot wokred at all ( HR and breathing ) activity level and position works . So we went back to the producer and they will try to work on a newer system to make it available for swimmers. So keep tuned but out of the water . Cheers Juerg. |
