Hallo all together,
yes , true , it was somewhat quite on here over the last few month.
well summer holiday and the main reason, Herb got for me some new toys to play with and I just could not resist to play them in all different way.
I , as well had Andri, my son , and a physio from Switzerland here ( Fabian ) and we had lot's of fun to try all different types of ideas.
Now after testing and experimenting there is the question:
Are we smarter,?
Do we have more answers to still a lot of open questions?
First assessment to this questions :
wowww actually less answers , but lot's more questions and a whole lot of new ideas on how we can improve or at least try to improve the practical work for the coach out on the real world and bring out there some "lab" technology closer to the real activity we do with our clients.
I will try over the next few weeks to give you some more inside view and will spread them over the different topics we have , like Spiro Tiger, Fit mate and other main threads .

The main focus was , to try to keep improving the FaCT idea of assessing the client more individual and try to move more and more away from the traditional thinking of one idea fit's for everybody to our idea of:
1 client one program , individual assessed and re- assessed.
You know what I mean:
Using heart rate only and the different ideas of testing with heart rate and using % for the intensity zoning.
Okay don't get me wrong , yes we still use heart rate but in combination with different other informations.
For new readers. : Don't look on here for rules like 220 - age and calculation of % for your zoning .
As well don't look for maximal heart rate assessments and calculation based on this idea.
Ha ha yes Andri has a hard time in his lectures at the university , because that is just what he had to learn. Maximal heart rate ( Karvonen idea ) and that is the way it goes. So much to traditional ideas )So let's go directly to the crazy idea

FaCT IRIS
yes it is a Feldmann and Chlebek test FaCT
for assessing
IRIS Individual recovery and Intensity System

IRIS is as well in the Greek myth. the good of the rainbow.
The connection of the different spectrum of color .
Hmm how does that fit together.
Over time we will see , that the new ideas will show you a spectrum of information about possible changes in the body system and how do we arrange them better to improve the performance as well as to avoid overload of the client.

Here a very short summary what we may be able to show now.
The actual Test FaCT Iris is the same as the FaCT basic.
The big difference is now what more we may be able to read out of the information due to new and smarter equipment.
I will try to show how we may be able to see what system of some of the main systems may be the actual limitation of the performance and how we apply the information back into the training plan.

Okay summary of the Fact and what we use to start with :

We assess the cardio) vascular ) system
we assess the pulmonary system
we assess the metabolic system
we assess the actual physical performance
and we have some indirect information of the CNS ( neurological fatigue ) as well.

Test:
Basic step test with a certain step length
Fixed wattage or speed ( or physical units) on the way up.
we test now on the way up heart rate and possible changes in HRV ( heart rate Variability ), possible finding LLL and ULL and have now better ideas , why we not always find this limits.
During the step test we use a small ( smallest VO2 assessment equipment Fit Mate from Italy ).
Okay yes we can check in the same time if we like VO2 max , but that is not why we use it at all.
This small toy measures very accurate the breathing frequency as well the total air volume ( besides the VO2 ) and we can now the first time see what really happens pulmonary during the step test.
Goal : assess the pulmonary fitness and go back and assess , whether this is for that client for the moment a limitation .
Based on the result we can now produce a very individual pulmonary training .
Now the beauty keeps coming . with the Fit Mate we see the caloric need on each step and the caloric change from step to step. with this info we can go back and see the efficiency from this client during his sport . Based on that we can assess, whether he may better work on technique or on other weaknesses.
No it's not over yet.
We actually can assess the VO2 the clients moves per breath and see where the intensity is going out of balance.
Perhaps something like a pulmonary balance point or zone. (PBP)
well following this idea we can see whether the cardio system may run somewhere out of balance and we can assess the VO2 per heart beat and see the trend there.
.
Is that all , no wait with assessing the FeO2 % we see the actual % the body can take up of O2 and this trend will gives us some info on better FFA usage , as well as the trend will show , whether there is a diffusion problem for O2, or just simply a pulmonary ( diaphragm weakness) or a possible nutritional limitation ( Fe Hb ) but as well in combination with the O2 sat trend a possible problem of hyper - or hypo ventilation .
Woww as you will see lot's to play with and we make for you some packages ready as a kind of :
starter FaCT tester like the level I testing ( see Fact education )
now we may have for the people , who like to go the next step a level II idea ready and for the very busy FaCT centers a Level III

Equipment we use for the different levels.

Level I : heart rate monitor ( preferable with a own zone test version from Polar )
plus a Lactate Pro from Akray
plus a soft wear from Herb
( and a big advantage a course with Dr. A. Sellars and Ginnie Sellars from FaCT Education ) and now you are ready to roll.

Level; II ( advantage if you worked for a while with the Level I idea .
Lactate Pro
Softwear from Herb
Polar as Level I but nice if you have a Polar with HRV or RLX )
A bio harness system ( see soon on our web site )
If possible a level II course ( or your nice brain ) and you are ready to roll.

Level III
well that is my dream toy store.
Lactate Pro
Polar watch with RLX ( HRV
Fit Mate
Herb's soft wear and the new soft wear ( under production )
and a whole portion of open mind set to see the possible potential of improving this idea even further
We just started to scratch the surface and it would be a dream to have different people collecting information this way and learn from this to improve further.
Okay yes I know it sound out of the blue , but I will start to give very clear case studies what we can do with all the ideas above and how we integrate this into the practical work.

Okay last thing for today :
Bio Harness
Hmmm a dream comes true
It is a belt ( like Polar belt which either can store or wireless transmit the datas as followed, so as a coach you can live see what is going on.
You see wireless from your client the heart rate
You see the accurate breathing frequency
You have direct info on his skin temperature
you can assess his activity level and you can see his Position ( Posture between ) and 90 degrees, well true as well as - 90 degrees.
So you can see in a runner for example or on a cyclist whether he chances position and what is the effect of calorie used , and O2 moved and so on. Endless ideas just not enough time in a day .
will be back to confuse you , as well as myself .
Juerg
Nice to be back
